The ongoing situation in Gaza is reaching a critical point, and it’s hard to ignore the heartbreaking reality. Each day sees Israel violating the ceasefire, while the United States, as the supposed guarantor of peace, remains largely inactive. This inaction has led to a rapid deterioration of conditions in Gaza. Humanitarian aid is being effectively blocked at the border, exacerbating the crisis. Amidst freezing temperatures and relentless rain, individuals of all ages, from infants to the elderly, are succumbing to the harsh environment. Out of this overwhelming despair emerge poignant stories that highlight the severity of the situation.
I found myself facing a weary woman, who sat in silence, her exhaustion palpable. Two small girls clung to her, dressed inadequately for the biting cold; their clothes were more suited for a mild spring afternoon than the brutal winter they were enduring. Over them was a jacket, so tattered and worn that it seemed to mock the very concept of warmth and safety. On their feet were flimsy plastic slippers intended for indoor use, now exposed to the unforgiving mud and chill. At that moment, I felt an uncomfortable sense of shame for my own footwear, which provided far more comfort than theirs.
I gently took one of the girl's hands and placed it on the table. Her fingers were tiny and fragile, still belonging to a child who should have been focused on learning new skills like drawing or writing her name. Instead, her delicate hands bore the marks of trauma. The skin was broken and dirty, with injuries that were deep despite their small size. They appeared infected, but not in a way that resembled any medical condition I had learned about—no textbook disease with a scientific name that could be easily categorized.
As I examined her hand closely, she spoke up.
With a calmness that was unsettling, she recounted how, during the night, while she was trying to sleep in their tent, rats had gnawed at her fingers.
There were no tears, no dramatic expressions of pain; her tone was as matter-of-fact as if she were commenting on the weather or recalling a chilly night. Struggling to comprehend the horror of her words, I found myself asking for clarification, almost desperately hoping to hear something different. "Rats?"
"Yes," she confirmed immediately, taken aback by my astonishment.
