Golden State Warriors Make a Move: Trading Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield for Kristaps Porziņģis
The Golden State Warriors have made a significant move in the NBA, trading forward Jonathan Kuminga and guard Buddy Hield to the Atlanta Hawks for center Kristaps Porziņģis. This deal comes as Kuminga, a 23-year-old from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has been sitting out due to a bone bruise in his left knee, missing his fifth straight game. The Warriors' coach, Steve Kerr, had previously discussed with Kuminga his reduced playing time and the possibility of a trade.
Kuminga's Season Statistics
Kuminga, who was Golden State's seventh overall pick in the 2021 Draft, has appeared in 20 games this season, starting in 13 of them. His average statistics include 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists. On September 30, he signed a two-year contract worth up to $46.5 million, with an option for the 2026-27 season.
Porziņģis' Struggles and Trade
Porziņģis, an NBA champion with the Celtics in 2024, has faced health issues in his first season with the Hawks. He last played on January 7 and is shooting 36% on 3-point shots this season. The trade for Porziņģis provides the Warriors with a dependable big man, while Kuminga and Hield move on to a new team.
The trade was first reported by Shams Charania, who noted that the deal was pending league approval. The Warriors' general manager, Mike Dunleavy, had previously stated that there was no immediate indication of other teams' interest in Kuminga after Jimmy Butler's season-ending injury.
