Fallout Franchise: New Vegas Dev's Take on Bethesda's Approach (2026)

The Fallout franchise has been a beloved series for many, but its evolution has sparked some intriguing debates. One of the original creators of Fallout 2 and a writer for Fallout: New Vegas, Chris Avellone, has shared his thoughts on Bethesda's interpretation of the franchise, and it's a controversial take.

Avellone believes that Bethesda, despite owning the franchise, has strayed from the original vision and intent of the games. He highlights how the lighthearted and comedic tone of recent Fallout titles, such as Fallout 4 and Fallout '76, might lead modern players to assume this was always the franchise's style. But Avellone argues that Bethesda has lost touch with the roots of Fallout.

When asked about Bethesda's approach, Avellone responded, "They seem to lack an understanding of Fallout's origins and, arguably, a lack of care for them. They want to put their own spin on it and make that the new normal. This often results in a colorful, shallow theme park experience, with a few notable exceptions in the DLC space, like Far Harbor and Point Lookout. Even so, theme parks can be fun, and if people enjoy it, that's great."

Avellone clarified that he doesn't hold any ill will towards Bethesda, praising their open-world game designs while also pointing out their weaknesses in storytelling and their handling of the Speech skill. He acknowledges that every developer has its strengths and weaknesses.

Interestingly, Bethesda's Todd Howard recently praised Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, stating they were the perfect choice for the game. This is a testament to the talent and experience of Avellone and his colleagues at Obsidian, who had worked on previous Fallout titles.

Later this year, PC gamers can look forward to a Fallout: New Vegas 15th Anniversary physical bundle, but console players will miss out. Many fans, including actor Danny Trejo, have called for a Fallout: New Vegas remake, and their wishes might come true as remakes of Fallout 3 and New Vegas are rumored to be in development.

So, what do you think? Is Bethesda's take on Fallout a refreshing new direction, or has it strayed too far from its roots? Let us know in the comments!
