Atlanta United's New Signing: A Veteran Goalkeeper Joins the Team!
Get ready for some exciting news, Atlanta United fans! The club has just announced a significant addition to its roster, and it's a move that could spark some interesting discussions.
Atlanta United has signed experienced goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos on a free transfer, with a contract lasting until the 2026 season and options for the following two seasons. This signing brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the team's backline.
Hoyos, at 36 years old, has an impressive career record, having made 341 appearances and kept an incredible 135 clean sheets across various competitions. He's no stranger to the big stage, having played in the Argentine first and second divisions, as well as the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. His leadership skills were evident as he donned the captain's armband for Vélez Sarsfield and Newell's Old Boys.
"We're thrilled to have Lucas on board," said Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson. "His experience and familiarity with Tata's style of play will be invaluable. Lucas will bring a competitive edge and guide our young goalkeeping group as we aim to strengthen our roster."
But here's where it gets intriguing... Hoyos's journey to Atlanta United is quite the tale. Starting his career at Newell's, he progressed through their academy before making his first division debut in 2014. He then had stints at various clubs, including a loan spell at Gimnasia y Esgrima, where he kept 12 clean sheets in just 21 games. His most recent club was Newell's, where he made 63 appearances from 2023 to 2025, including a run in the 2023 Copa Sudamericana.
And this is the part most people miss: Hoyos's impact goes beyond his impressive stats. He's a leader, a mentor, and a key figure in the dressing room. His experience will be vital in guiding Atlanta United's younger players and helping them reach new heights.
So, what do you think, Atlanta United fans? Are you excited about this signing? Do you think Hoyos's experience will be a game-changer for the team? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments! Let's discuss and celebrate this new addition to the squad!
